"How to Help People Start"
A Conversation with Pulitzer Prize–Winning Journalist Jodi Kantor
Â
The Society of Advice exists for financial advisors who care deeply about being excellent at the craft of advice.
In April, I’m thrilled to welcome Jodi Kantor into The Society. Jodi is a Pulitzer Prize–winning investigative reporter for The New York Times, and now the author of a remarkable new book called How to Start: Discovering Your Life’s Work.
This isn’t a book about career advice in the conventional sense. It’s a deeply reported, deeply human investigation into how people find work that actually means something—written by someone who has spent her career exposing the best and worst of our working lives.
Every advisor knows this moment. A client sits across from you and says something like:
...“My daughter just graduated and has no idea what she wants to do.”
...“My husband is miserable in his job but afraid to leave.”
...“We’ve spent everything on this education and I’m not sure it’s going to pay off.”
These aren’t financial questions. They’re life questions.
And they land on the advisor’s desk because you are, for many of your clients, the most trusted person in their world.
Jodi Kantor wrote How to Start for exactly this moment. The book grew out of a commencement address she gave at Columbia in 2025, when students told her they weren’t worried about politics or campus controversies—they were worried about one thing: How am I supposed to find and start my life’s work?
That question is not just for twenty-two-year-olds. It’s for anyone in transition. And the people best positioned to help are the ones already sitting in the room with them: you.
